摘要/Abstract:

The relentless progress of nanoelectronics fuels the technological revolution towards a smart world that immersively impacts our daily life, work and play. Embedded artificial intelligence adds even more powerful capabilities. The Internet of Things, proactive healthcare monitoring, comforting home-care robots, autonomous driving, industry 4.0, precision farming, etc. are but a few examples. Sensors and sensor interfaces with intelligence in the edge play a key role in all of these. This presentation will focus on core challenges in the design of electronic circuits for these emerging applications, where cost, power and reliability are core issues, besides the raw performance. This will be illustrated with several practical IC design examples

Bio:

Georges G.E. Gielen is professor in the MICAS research group of the Department of Electrical Engineering since 1993 and Full Professor since 2005. In 1990-1991, he was visiting lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of California, Berkeley. From 2007 till 2012 he was the Head of the MICAS research group. In 2012 he became the Chair of the Department and from 2013 till 2017 he served as Vice-rector of the University of Leuven responsible for the entire group Science, Engineering and Technology. He is the PI coordinator of the Leuven CHIPS Center of Excellence on microelectronic IC design.

His research interests are in the design of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits (sensor interfaces, data converters…), and especially in analog and mixed-signal CAD tools and design automation (modeling, simulation and symbolic analysis, analog synthesis, analog layout generation, analog and mixed-signal testing). He is a frequently invited keynote speaker and course lecturer at universities and companies worldwide, and is coordinator or partner of several (industrial) research projects in this area. He has (co-)authored more than 600 papers in edited books, international journals and conference proceedings, and has co-founded 9 spinoffs so far.

Georges Gielen regularly serves as member of the program committee of international conferences (DATE, DAC, ICCAD, ESSCIRC, etc.) and of the editorial board of international journals. He served as General Chair of the 2006 DATE conference, the 2007 ICCAD conference and the 2017 ESSCIRC conference. He received the 1995 Best Paper Award in the John Wiley international journal on Circuit Theory and Applications, he was the 1997 Laureate of the Belgian Royal Academy on Sciences, Literature and Arts in the discipline of Engineering, he received the 2000 Alcatel Award from the Belgian National Fund of Scientific Research for innovative research in telecommunications, and won the DATE 2004 conference Best Paper Award. He served as the President of the IEEE Circuits And Systems (CAS) Society in 2005. He was elected DATE Fellow in 2007, and received the IEEE Computer Society Outstanding Contribution Award and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Meritorious Service Award in 2007. He received the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation recognition award in 2014, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Mac Van Valkenburg career award in 2015. He has been a Fellow of the IEEE since 2002.
